BLOG              TOPIC:  ADDRESSING LIFE PROBLEMS

Wednesday, October 12, 2016

GoalSupporters* group discussions have several over-arching goals including:
i.  working to maintain a group focus throughout the duration of the discussion;
ii. inclusion and participation of all persons involved;
iii. using effective, empathic communication methods; and
iv. promoting a safe and supportive atmosphere.
The best way to maintain a group focus is to address any comment you make to a specific person who has already spoken in the group, following the topic of conversation that has already been set. If you would like to change the topic of conversation for the group, then it is important to point this out when making your comment.  Then persons participating in the discussion will let you know if they are ready to change topics.  Sometimes it is not clear what topic the group is discussing at a particular point.  In this case the group may be searching for a topic, giving participants more leeway to bring up whatever is on their mind.  For the current blog topic (Addressing Life Problems), I have started a conversation with some fictional participants in order to demonstrate how to get a discussion going and how to identify the speaker and the target of each comment.  You are welcome to carry on with this conversation or to change it as you like.  I plan to participate in this discussion, so I look forward to talking with you all.  Helen

Since I am making the first comment, I might as well say what's on my mind. I'm really hating my job lately. I'd like to change but I'm afraid I won't find anything else that is any better.

I know exactly how you feel. It seems like I haven't liked my job for years, but I never do anything about it. I don't think I can do anything about it.

Jeff(fictional) to Mary said...

That sounds kind of hopeless.

Do you like your job?

Jeff(fictional) to Mary said...

Not really. But I try not to let it get me down. I try to make sure I have a life outside of work that is good. I try to remember the job is just how I make a living.

Janet(fictional) to Mary said...

Why don't you like your job?

Mary(fictional) to Janet said...

Mostly my boss is a jerk. None of the other people there are that nice either.

Dan(fictional) to group said...

I just joined you all. I got back from Iraq two months ago, and I've been having a hard time finding jobs that will lead anywhere. I'm thinking of going to college or to a trade school. But I really want to start making a living so I can get on with my life.
